brightonfdlogo06.gifAs I mentioned in the post introducing Organic Fortnight, I was planning to visit the Brighton Food & Drink Festival Market and I did! Just as I hoped, it was a mouth-watering experience. I tasted and sipped my way around the stands, along with 25,000 others who visited the festival this weekend.

This year’s ‘A Taste of Sussex’ market was sponsored by ASDA, who are following Waitrose’s lead by including locally sourced produce in their stores. They launched their Sussex range in local stores last Friday and their stand offered the opportunity for festival goers to taste the exciting new range.

johnsonsprovisions.JPGI was thoroughly impressed with the numerous stands dedicated to specialist/intolerant diets and organic foods. In particular, Johnsons Dietary Provisions Ltd caught my eye, with an enormous range of ‘free-from’ products, including, gluten, yeast and nut free. As yet, their products can not be bought online. However, Johnsons will be launching their retail outlet in Shoreham-by-sea next month and there are plans afoot to launch an online shop in the near future.

intolerablefoodco.JPG
Intolerable Food Co specialise in gluten and dairy free frozen ready meals - fabulous for us ‘imperfect’ special diet people. They are based in Sheffield Park in East Sussex and provide a delivery service (within a 20 mile radius) and a nationwide mail order service. Lovely ladies who held back the tide of visitors so I could take some photos, Thank you!!

duesouth.JPGRepresentatives from various local restaurants were cooking-up delicious treats, to take away, creating a great atmosphere in Pavilion Gardens which became an impromptue pic-nic area. Amoungst those present were Due South, who source organic, free-range and biodynamic ingredients from small independant producers within Sussex. I tried their delicious (but pricy!) rabbit kebabs with tabouleh.

moshimoshi2.JPGMoshi Moshi were also there (a personal favourite), making & serving fresh sushi. Finally I washed it all down with a refreshing Apple Minty Cooler from the juice stand, divine!

For those with a sweet tooth, Crumbs and Iced Gem Cakes served up a feast of gluten-free, diabetic-friendly and vegan homemade cakes. Whilst The Chocolate Alchemist’s selection of oragnic chocolates really was a delight for the eyes as well as the taste-buds, but more about that in a future post.

dawgsbiscuits.JPGFinally, to my pleasant surprise and intrigue, I found The Dawg’s Biscuits; a company selling healthy dog biscuits and treats. In this day and age we are just as concerned with our pet’s diets as with our own, so why not have a stand dedicated to their well being too?! ‘The Dawg’s Biscuits’ was a welcome addition to this market and I imagine, raised a lot of interest. Hopefully next year we’ll see healthy treats for cats too!

With much food for thought (pardon the pun!), I came away from the market inspired and I look forward to writing many more posts.

Coming soon… Organic Chocolate, including tastings and reviews (yippee!!).
