tumeric Alzheimer’s disease is very close to my heart. My grandmother - she of chicken soup fame - passed away recently and Alzheimer’s had ravaged her terribly. I have lost an important influence in my life and I fully understand why looking after ourselves is so important in helping to avoid this horrible disease.

Whilst researching spices recently, I was intrigued by information about turmeric helping to treat Alzheimer’s sufferers.

Turmeric contains a compound called curcumin that may help keep the brain young. Older adults in Singapore who ate turmeric-rich curry often were half as likely to suffer from mental decline. Other studies suggest turmeric may help improve memory.

Turmeric is one of nature’s most powerful healers. Many in India use it as a readily available antiseptic for cuts, burns and bruises. Practitioners of Ayurvedic medicine say it contains fluoride which is thought to be essential for teeth. It is also used as an antibacterial agent.

It is taken in some Asian countries as a dietary supplement, this spice has been found to be helpful in fighting inflammatory bowel diseases, including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, rheumatoid arthritis, cystic fibrosis, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.

As a vital ingredient in many Indian dishes, it goes without saying that turmeric-rich curries should be a staple amongst Alzheimer’s sufferers!
