cowsI was happily catching up on my news and I came across an article in the Guardian which literally made my chin drop! The opening lines of the article: Cloned animals and their offspring have been declared safe to eat; in a matter of months their meat will be on sale in the US.

I am utterly astounded that without much needed scientific research, GM animals and their produce will be available for consumption! I try to be as ethical and enviro-conscious as possible and I can truly see the benefits of cloning animals, but my first instincts are that of a scientist, who is very worried indeed.

More research needs to be conducted into the long-term consumption of cloned animals and the possible effects this could have on the public. We don’t know enough yet to be able to say that it’s 100% safe.

I really recommend reading the article, it is fascinating and scary!

If this meat was from a cloned animal, would you eat it? The Guardian, Monday April 21 2008
