    Use of prebiotics, generally plant food as well as probiotics (certain kinds of bacteria) have been shown to be helpful in health and sickness. However, probiotics are like antibiotics, i.e. they are effect specific; not every probiotic is going to work in every illness or in everyone.

    I have been using pre and pro biotics for a few years and have benefitted greatly. The problem I believe is that most products are not resistant to stomach acid, which is why mass marketed yoghurts, for example, do not really help – unless you are prepared to eat several a day. There are however some very good freeze dried supplements that come in acid resistant capsules and provide a wide -spectrum of probiotics. The bacteria are activated by the (cold) water taken with the pills. It is important not to take supplements with hot food or drinks as this will only increase the mortality rate of the bacteria. As for pre biotics, these seem to help me but even if you are not sure, they are all foods that contain a number of other health benefits and should certainly be stocked in the home.

    You’re right about the yoghurts and “probiotic” drinks (which are often full of sugar too) as they contain only a few million bacteria, compared to the trillions we have in our guts.

    There was an interesting article in the paper today, which said that probiotics are not to be recommended for sick people as their weakened immune system could mistake the friendly bacteria for foreign rather than self and cause a reaction. Food for thought.

    Remember to always take probiotics with food so that the stomach acid is diluted.

    I feel more research needs to be done before the health benefits of probiotics can be confirmed, as clearly they can be helpful to some people but detrimental to others.

    I have what in medical jargon is named Irritable Bowel Syndrome.This started only recently.One year back I had stomach ulcer which was cured with lots of antibiotics.So one gastroenterologist thought too much of antibiotics had destroyed good bacteria in me.He has prescribed a probiotic supplement(in capsules) which is VSL3 which I started a short while ago.I will be thankful if any one can tell me whether I am doing the right thing and whether this particular brand is all right.     Your gastroenterologist is probably right about the antibiotics disturbing the balance of your gut flora. I hadn’t heard of the brand he recommended but have just checked them out and they look pretty good to me. I’d certainly give them a go.

    In the FAQ it says you can take them at any time, but I’d still say take with food so that your stomach acid is diluted and more good bacteria are likely to get through to where they are needed. Reduce the dosage if you feel bloated and/or constipated.

    I’d be really interested in hearing back from you in 3 weeks to see if you’ve noticed a difference.

    I would also recommend increasing the foods that feed your own strain of gut bacteria – FOS (as supplement), Jerusalem artichokes, fermented foods like tempeh, yohgurt, sauerkraut.

    I was hoping someone here could answer a question for me.

    I have been taking antibiotics for 10 days, and I rarely take them at all in life. Due to a severe infection, I had to. Now I am replenishing my system with probiotics. I purchased a supplement that contains enteric-coated capsules (that pass through the stomach acid) and contain 8 strains of beneficial bacteria.

    A therapist of mine recommended that I take them on an empty stomach first thing in the morning, with a few heaping spoonfulls of golden flax seed. She said that the bacteria will eat the coating on the flax and it will help them to replenish my bowels. Can anyone here verify this approach?

    Hi George,

    I know that flaxseed is a prebiotic, therefore it will feed the bacteria in your probiotic supplement. Flaxseed is also high in dietary fibre and it’s often recommended to aid digestion.

    I am not sure about taking the supplement on an empty stomach though, I imagine it’s to prevent there being too much digestion taking place and degrading the capsule before it gets where it’s needed.

    Many thanks for your kindly suggestions.In the foods you mention what is FOS(suplement)? then,as regards these foods,I have been advised to take only soluble fiber foods and exclude any milk product(I am basically a vegetarian though I take eggs[white stuff only] and fish).

    This on FOS: Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are short-chain polymers comprised of D-fructose and D-glucose, which are not metabolized by the body like simple sugars are, and are therefore considered non-digestible oligosaccharides. They occur naturally in bananas, garlic, Jerusalem artichokes and certain other foods, and technically are a soluble fiber (ARG FOS are derived from chicory root). FOS are effective sweeteners, being half as sweet as sucrose, yet are not absorbed and have minimal caloric value. FOS may be considered prebiotic as they selectively support the proliferation of intestinal probiotics, especially the bifidobacteria.*

    CONTRA-INDICATIONS:Some individuals using FOS experience gastrointestinal bloating that does not subside after 1 of 2 weeks of use. In those cases, FOS should be discontinued. Recent clinical experience by some practitioners suggests that there are some unfriendly microbial invaders that are suspected of feeding on FOS. Symptoms of that occurring would be as indicated above.

    Soluble fibre soaks up water to form softer faeces. Some people find insoluble fibre, like bran for instance, irritating to the gut wall. Dairy products are mucous-forming, so I am not surprised you have been advised to avoid them, although I would still include probiotic yoghurt as long as it has no ill effects.

    Goldenseal, Slippery Elm, and Marshmallow are all good for soothing and healing the intestinal tract. Glutamine provides energy for the gut wall cells, and Aloe Vera is very soothing when there is inflammation (which is what IBS is).

    Fish oils (omega 3) are very important for general health and wellbeing, so lots of oily fish in your diet is great.

  13. Firstly, thanks Sarah. It’s good to know that my years of studying nutrition (which is an ongoing process!) haven’t gone to waste.

    Secondly, which nutritious foods are you deprived of, Paresh? Do you mean dairy products? You should be able to eat lots of other nutritious foods that keep you strong and that don’t iritate your condition. Also, you can supplement any nutrients that you don’t think that your diet is providing.

    I do believe that IBS is curable. You need to heal your gut, rule out any allergies and/or intolerances (have you had any food allergy testing?), and, of course, stress has a great deal to play in IBS and I don’t know what your stress levels are like.

    It is a complex condition and I would really recommend your working with a nutritional therapist with an holistic approach. http://www.ion.ac.uk has a list of qualified nutritional therapists, by region.

    From personal experience, I know how it feels when you are first diagnosed with IBS and how weak it makes you feel when you are suffering the worst. Hang on in there! You will be able to control it and begin feeling better. It has been over 2 years since I was first diagnosed with IBS and I am starting to put weight on properly and feel energetic again! You will be ok.
