Melamine update: novelty products withdrawn

GreenFood AlertFSA Melamine is an industrial chemical that should not be present in food. Milk products containing melamine have been at the centre of a major food incident in China.

An Agency spokesperson said: ‘This is a first. We’ve never had to put out an alert before on “willy spread” – chocolate-flavoured or otherwise. But on a serious note, if anybody has used any of the affected products they shouldn’t worry, the risk from the melamine in these products is low and it is very unlikely to be harmful.’

The levels of melamine detected in the affected products were 126mg/kg, 153mg/kg and 259mg/kg respectively. The European Commission has said that products found with more than 2.5mg/kg must be withdrawn from the market and destroyed.

The products were manufactured in Zhongshan, China by Le Bang and imported into the UK by Scobie (Llarn) Ltd. They have been sold to a number of Ann Summers premises in the UK.

Scobie (Llarn) Ltd has removed the affected products from sale.

Diary of a Chron’s sufferer #3

Mary Having followed an elimination diet and discovered all the things you can eat and not eat, having spent a couple of years eating healthily and not having had a flare-up nor symptoms of your illness, it is soooooo very easy to slide down the slippery road of temptation and bite by bite, eat foods you shouldn’t eat. The typical feeling is “it´s just a treat; just the one won´t do me any harm” and before you know it you are eating huge amounts of foods that are in effect totally poisonous to your body and sooner or later you fall ill again because you have provoked a flare up! The terrible symptoms of bloody stools and weight loss, tiredness and bad moods return, and to resolve all this discomfort you have to be put on cortisone medication again!

Speaking from experience, this can happen and I hope my advice to you about strong will power and how to resist eating what you shouldn´t will not fall on deaf ears. Every time you have a flare up and your intestines ulcerate they DO NOT RECOVER! Having bled and formed scar tissue your intestines cannot regenerate new tissue and eradicate the scars, they stay forever and the less you take care of your intestines the more restricted they will become and this will eventually lead to you having to be operated on, which is totally avoidable! So please stick to your personal diets, and be adventurous with your recipes, just because you cannot eat certain foods, this does not mean your meals have to boring and bland forever, you can add flavour to dishes with many natural alternatives and still remain healthy. Take a look at the links below to Recipes and even Restaurants that cater for your dietary requirements.

In my next post I will be talking about different types of diets and how what we eat makes us who we are. Did you know that if you have Chron´s you are more likely to suffer from neck and back ache problems?? If you control what you eat you can reduce, or eradicate not only your symptoms from Chron’s or Colitis, but also the neck and back aches you suffer from.

Tips to increase your dietary fibre

JaneClarke 76% of people lay claim to a healthy diet, but further investigation reveals that despite honourable intentions, Britons literally don’t know what’s good for them and are in a daze over healthy eating guidelines. A new health study of 2,157 Britons, marking the launch of Warburtons campaign to encourage the nation to eat more fibre, reveals that while people are aware that fibre-typically found in bread, pasta, rice, fruit, vegetables, beans and nuts-is essential for keeping their digestive healthy, more than three-quarters (76%) of men and women do not know that the guideline daily amount (GDA) of fibre is 24g, despite half of respondents believing that they eat enough fibre.

So, where does fibre come from, why is it important, and what exactly does it do for us? Lucky for us, one of Britain’s leading nutritionists, Jane Clarke, is hosting a whistle-stop web guide to fibre facts and figures. Not only will Jane bring you up to speed on such essential dietary issues as how much fibre you should be eating, she’ll also be lifting the lid on why a correct fibre intake does more than just keep your digestive system healthy.

Jamie’s Ministry of Food is under attack

JamieMinistryFood An article in the Times online ‘Oliver pelted over cooking crusade’ reports that “Oliver has been charged with acting like a middle-class missionary sent from London to teach the town how to eat.”

John Gilding, leader of the Conservative group on Rotherham council, was quoted saying “The people he put on television were pretty down-market and he gave the impression that everyone living here is like that”. “It looks like he thinks we’re all as thick as planks, and that we live on doner kebabs”.“People are enraged. He has a point with regards to school dinners and it is good he is trying to educate people, but Rotherham people are not numpties.”

Amid all the attacks and criticism, there is serious hope that the programme will encourage healthier eating what ever budget you are on. Yes, Jamie’s programme has focused on a particular type of people in Rotherham and has upset people but don’t his campaigns always upset someone? You can never make every one happy all of the time, it’s that simple. All you can do is educate and then it’s up to people what they do with their new knowledge.

There are reports that Jamie Oliver wants to give up these campaigns because of all the abuse he and they receive. For goodness sake man! Pull up your chin and fight for what you believe. Campaigns are only successful if you’re passionate about them, why would anyone support your cause if they thought you didn’t really believe in it?
