Beloved British cook Delia Smith has published her latest book How to Cheat at Cooking and has caused great controversy and debate! Renowned for her ‘proper’ cooking and back-to-basics methods, this new book is far removed from her previous How to cook series, looking at using ready-made ingredients to ‘cheat’ rather than starting from scratch.
In a recent radio interview for the BBC, Delia talks about the previous How to Cook series and feels that she failed in her aims to engage the nation and attract them back to cooking. She hopes this new book will encourage those people still afraid to cook, making busy times easier and emphasises the importance of eating properly and not relying on ‘junk food’.
When asked about her views on organic foods and local produce versus those requiring many air-miles, she feels it is a ‘mine-field’. Delia feels eating properly within your financial limits is of great importance, irrespective of where you are in the world. She added, that if everyone went organic and ‘local’, it could have dire consequences for the third world, where food production provides employment for families and enables them to feed their children and survive.
My mother’s book shelf is crammed with Delia’s books and I grew up around passion for food and cooking, Delia being a huge influence throughout. I really don’t know how I feel about this new book. I can understand Delia’s motivations and will always applaud the encouragement of healthier eating but I am unsure that this is the right way to do it.
Do you agree with Delia’s new ‘cheating’ philosophy or do you feel she has strayed from the path? I really would like to know your views!
