Indeed Food Poisoning is not the most fun hearted of subjects to talk about as it mainly consists of feeling terrible and sometimes has serious repercussions for those that are unfortunate enough to be knocked out by it.
I myself have suffered from food poisoning in the past. No it was NOT a nice event at all and to this day I am not 100% sure what caused it, though the guess at undercooked meat still sits at the top of the list for probably causes.
The reason for this slightly darker post is to tie in to food safety week here in the UK as well as get some feedback in terms of the causes and indeed the preventative measures associated with food poisoning.
Wikipedia has this to say:
A foodborne illness, also foodborne disease and commonly called food poisoning, is any illness resulting from the consumption of food contaminated with infectious or toxic agents; it can affect any person.
[1] Infectious agents inculde pathogenic bacteria, toxins, viruses, prions or parasites. Such contamination usually arises from improper handling, preparation, or food storage. Good hygiene practices before, during, and after food preparation can reduce the chances of contracting an illness. The action of monitoring food to ensure that it will not cause foodborne illness is known as food safety. Foodborne disease can also be caused by a large variety of toxins that affect the environment.
Have you suffered from food poisoning in the past? I originally asked this on the new forums that we just put online, but seeing as we are in the week of food safety I figured this could do with it’s own post.
What tips do you have for preventing food poisoning? I would guess the usual of cleaning surfaces and washing hands are the most obvious, but are there issues related to storage or perhaps cooking certain foods that should be taken note of?
