FoodWithoutFear The Food Without Fear Campaign

  • People with coeliac disease are tired of not being able to eat out safely
  • People with coeliac disease are fed up with scanning a menu only to find it does not cater for a gluten-free diet
  • People with coeliac disease are afraid to eat out

About our campaign

The Food Without Fear campaign is not just an Awareness Week project. Raising awareness and understanding with chefs and caterers in hospitals, schools, restaurants, cafes, hotels and with airlines is an important long-term campaign aim for Coeliac UK.

The problem

We know that for people with coeliac disease, eating out on a gluten-free diet can be a miserable experience. Choice is often very limited and the risks of eating gluten unknowingly can put many off venturing out. Recent research conducted by the Health Economics Research Centre at the University of Oxford has shown 67% of people with coeliac disease are less likely to eat out and 77% are less likely to eat food provided in the workplace (unpublished data). Whilst gluten-free food is now more widely available for purchase in shops, it is still not a regular feature on many restaurant menus. We believe this has to change.

Our aim
To raise awareness and understanding of a gluten-free diet amongst chefs and caterers, healthcare professionals and hospital ward staff, parliamentarians and the general public to ensure that eating out through pleasure or need is freed from restrictions.

Our objectives

  1. Raise awareness with chefs and caterers and improve understanding of the gluten-free diet
  2. Continue to raise awareness of the gluten-free diet with parliamentarians
  3. Continue to raise awareness of symptoms and outcomes if coeliac disease is left untreated
  4. Improve the choice and availability of safe, gluten-free food
  5. Improve the listing of gluten-free choices on menus
  6. Increase the number of listings in the Eating Out Without venue guide

Why?

By increasing the demand for gluten-free food in eateries across the UK, we can raise awareness and increase the availability of safe, gluten-free choices. Together we can make sure eating out is freed from restrictions.
