I know I can count myself among many people, who would love to exist 100% organically. From the food I eat to the toiletries I put on my body, from the clothes I wear to the pillow where I lay my head; I wish it could all be organic. But it’s just not a practical or economical option, the cost can be prohibitive and there is not always an organic choice.
I’ve been trying to learn how to shop organically, as cost effectively as possible and I’ve discovered that there are a few simple shortcuts. With regards to fresh fruit and vegetables, it’s not always a question of being organic; consider the skin/peel and whether pesticides are able to penetrate it; consider how it’s grown and whether it’s resistant to threats and therefore subjected to less treatment.
Meat is another matter altogether. Animals reared organically are treated very differently, they are not given anti-biotics or hormones, they’re feed is organic and they have space in which to roam. Their treatment is far more humane than that of non-organically reared animals and worth paying a little extra for.
You don’t need to put hours of research into buying for tomorrow’s dinner, there is a lot of info out there within easy reach. For example, this article, What You Should & Shouldn’t Buy Organic, describes many fruits and vegetables which are ’safe’ to buy non-organic, with explanations and buying guides. There’s also a section detailing products that you should definitely buy organic, such as meat and milk.
With the wealth of information out there, it is possible to buy and eat organically within a budget. You can prioritise the produce which really must be organic, spend a little more there and choose more cost efficient, safe, non-organic varieties for the rest.

If you’re willing to spend a little time researching the source of food then the same quality can be obtained for a much lower price. There are many farms producing meat and veg to standards as high and often higher than organic produce but cannot afford, or simply do not subscribe to the organic certification scheme. Organically reared animals can be treated inhumainly, and non-organic animals can live in luxury, it isn’t as clear cut as many would have you think.
