carfood2.jpgAt some point in our day to day lives, we travel somewhere; be it by car, bus, train or plane. Of course there is the best option - walking - but sometimes the journey really is too far. During many journeys we take, we feel the need to eat or drink something.

According to a researcher at the Culinary Institute of America, 19 percent of all meals and snacks are eaten in the car. I find that quite a shocking statistic! But it got me thinking about the ideal sorts of food for journeys.

Firstly you have to consider practicality and safety. You don’t want anything you have to peel, un-wrap or necessarily hold with both hands - have you ever tried to eat a chicken-mayo sandwhich with one hand whilst driving and not manage to end up wearing half of it in your lap??

We all know you need to keep both hands on the wheel as near to 100% of the time as you can, thus food that you can just reach over and grab without having to look away from the road, is safest.

Crumb-free is always a good idea whether you’re a driver or passenger. No-one likes all those bits of pastry that fall off sausage rolls and pasties. They get everywhere! Equally, beware the melt factor - sticky bits of melted chocolate all over your lap are really annoying. Finally, healthy food does come into account, to keep your senses alert but sometimes you really just want chocolate!
