Many of Jamie’s projects are inspired by the Italian verve and passion for food, beginning with a TV series and cookery book 3 years ago, culminating in an Italian food range and Italian restaurant opening in Oxford this month.
Jamie’s successful Italian food range expands this summer with the arrival of three ‘posh bread spreads’. The range includes tangy Tomato & Red Onion, fragrant Green Olive & Fennel and tasty Tomato & Black Olive - all created using Jamie’s own recipes and with authentic Italian ingredients sourced from small producers in southern Italy.
Jamie says: “Bruschetta is a brilliant Italian starter or snack and these spreads are perfect as a base topping to which you could add creamy mozzarella, delicious Italian cured meats or whatever you want really.
Alternatively, you could use them as a relish with something like a roast leg of lamb or some home-made fishcakes. They’re also fantastic on their own.”
The sun-dried tomatoes used in these posh bread spreads are a variety called Rio Fuego which is a slightly longer plum tomato packed with flavour and are dried under the Mediterranean sun. Meanwhile the red onions are grown in a small village called Tropea on the Calabrian coast where the vegetables become much sweeter naturally in the warmer climate.
These spreads really are yummy! We mixed the Green Olive & Fennel spread with mayonnaise to accompany fish cakes and the combination was delicious. But my absolute favourite is the Tomato & Red Onion spread, which is great on grilled bread or straight from the jar on a spoon!!
I’m a great fan of bruschetta, it’s such an easy quick snack or even lunch and there are some really nice recipes on Jamie’s website. Jamie’s Italian food range also includes pasta sauces and pestos which I will definitely be trying!
