Back in September I posted about a visit to the ‘Taste of Sussex’ food fair; there I first discovered Johnson’s Dietary Provisions (JDP) and was introduced to their gluten-free ranges. Having been diagnosed gluten intolerant, I am trying to be entirely gluten-free and I was delighted when Helen contacted me and I have since learnt more about the company, the founder and the reasons behind the creation of the business.
Helen Pengelly was diagnosed as a coeliac in 2003 and encountered great difficulty in finding appetising gluten-free meals and products. As a result Helen founded JDP, who aim to provide a source of quality ‘free-from’ food and drinks to consumers and businesses alike. Her grandfather Thomas Johnson was also a coeliac and now her son Joe is currently undergoing diagnosis, so she has over 30 years’ knowledge and understanding of the difficulties that people face if they need to follow a special diet.
JDP has an ever-growing range of quality products which not only cater for gluten-free diets, but other allergies and special diets such as nut-free, dairy-free and diabetic. There is an online store which has a very user-friendly ordering system, however, as I live so close I visited the ‘real-life’ store in person, on the most recent open day. I bought a whole variety of items, including a spaghetti made from chickpeas which is really delicious and has fantastic texture, Dave loves it too! I have found the gluten-free mueslis very good, I’ve been using hot milk to make a lovely warming, filling breakfast on colder mornings. I was so impressed by the items I bought that day, that I’ve been back since to buy more goodies! You can see photos from the open day in the photo gallery.
If you can’t physically get to the shop, the online store really is easy to use, with a fast delivery service covering all of the UK and frozen items can also be delivered.
The next open day at JDP is on Sunday 6th May, 12:00pm - 3:00pm. In the run-up to Coeliac Awareness Week they will have lots of gluten free goodies in a mini ‘food fair’. Several of their manufacturers are attending including Intolerable Food Co, Iced Gem Cakes, Raspberry Creek, Ener-G. Safetoeat and there will be samples from many more.
I look forward to visiting again and trying many more products from Helen’s amazing selection and sharing my reviews with you all :)
