pumpkinseeds.JPGI enjoyed trying out different methods for roasting pumpkin seeds but life is simply too short to go through it on a regular basis. I include pumpkin seeds and other seeds in my diet on a daily basis, mainly in muesli, but also sprinkled on salads, incorporated in breads and eaten as a snack. I really like the tastes and textures of the different seeds, from pumpkin, to hemp and poppy. Seeds have so many health attributes too!

Seeds are an excellent natural source of essential vitamins, minerals, oils and fibre, so we’d all benefit from having a few seeds in our diet every day. I have discovered a really easy way to get your daily dose, is to snack on them, like they do in Portugal. As I said, life is too short to make your own and there are a wide variety of ready-roasted and flavoured seeds out there to buy.

Munchy Seeds are not only delicious, they are insanely addictive!! Dave actually has to take the pot away from me! They have a really great and surprising range, from simple plain roasted seeds, to Cajun and Vanilla flavoured seed mixes. The background to the company is just as interesting, Munchy seeds originally began as a family recipe for a savoury snack.

Crispin and Lucinda Clay brought the recipe over from New Zealand and in 1998, they bought two second-hand domestic ovens for £40 each, a car for £1,200 and Crispin fashioned £120 worth of steel into a kind of trailer. A few dry-roasted seeds later, plus some very basic A5 flyers frantically photocopied on Crispin’s dad’s machine, and Lucinda was gracing the rarified Festival of Food at Holkham Hall in Norfolk. This was the begining of a very exciting journey which has led them today, to producing eight varieties of Munchy Seeds, which appeal to lots of tastes.

The varieties include (pictured below): Omega Mix, Chili Mix, Cajun Mix, Vanilla Pumpkin, Naked Seed Mix, Pumpkin Mix and Original Mix (not pictured).

Munchy seeds come in pots or handy little snack packs, great for lunch boxes or even stocking fillers!!

My personal favourites are the Omega Mix and the Vanilla Pumkin, which are truly divine.

I like the pop of the hemp seeds in the Omega Mix and the poppy seeds add a great flavour. I really hope they think about other sweet flavours, the Vanilla Pumpkin were delicious and crunchy sprinkled over ice cream and were an excellent substitute for sesame seeds in the snaps I made to go with a chocolate mousse recently.
