VegetarianWeek

There are different reasons why people are vegetarians. Some disagree with killing and eating animals & fish, some simply do not like the texture and flavour of meat and for others, eating meat does not agree with them.

I personally, am a meat & fish eater but I do not eat them every day. Partly through digestive requirements and partly through taste, I enjoy purely vegetarian meals on a regular basis.

Around 5% of Britons are now vegetarian and don’t eat meat, chicken or fish, so they need to make sure they replace these foods with similarly nutritious vegetarian alternatives.

There are concerns that by following a vegetarian diet, you may be missing out on certain nutrients. Although protein might appear a primary concern, it is actually very easy to get enough protein as a vegetarian. Beans, peas and lentils, as well as eggs, dairy foods and nuts are all examples of good sources.

There are a very diverse range of vegetables and vegetarian products available now, so with imagination and inspiration you can make delicious dishes without missing out at all!

During this week I’ll be focusing on being meat and fish free, and hopefully inspire you with some interesting recipes.

The Vegetarian Society (www.vegsoc.org) is an educational charity promoting understanding and respect for vegetarian lifestyles. National Vegetarian Week (NVW) is the annual awareness-raising campaign promoting inspirational vegetarian food and the benefits of a meat-free lifestyle. For both ethical and economic reasons, countless millions of people throughout the world live on a vegetarian diet.
