I am a great believer in natural remedies, I have inherited so many from my mum and nan. Carrot syrup for coughs, sugared lemon slices for a sore throat, manuka honey for wounds, peppermint tea for upset tummy, the list is endless!
The research by Rowse, the UK’s leading honey producer, found that with an increasing disillusionment of traditional medicine such as paracetamol, anti-depressants and flu medicines, half of UK adults admitted they are more likely to use natural and food based remedies today than 5 to 10 years ago.
61% of Britains questioned said they would rather use natural products to ease certain illnesses such as flu, digestive problems and depression, and are now opting for remedies such as honey and lemon, Echinacea and St John’s Wort.
The findings showed that UK adults would be happy to take the following:
1) 72% - honey and lemon to ease cold symptoms
2) 58% - Garlic for enhanced immune function and lowering blood pressure
3) 49% - Pomegranate juice to help the heart
4) 48% - Echinacea to cure colds and boost immunity
5) 45% - Green tea to act as an antioxidant and aid weight loss
6) 43% - Almonds to reduce cholesterol
7) 42% - Ginseng to increase energy levels
8) 34% - Manuka honey for digestive problems
9) 30% - St John’s Wort for depression
10) 28% - Goji berry to boost antioxidant levels
Stuart Bailey, Rowse Chairman, comments: “The research clearly shows that people are seeking alternative and natural ways to treat their ailments because they realise that they can deliver real benefits.
Rowse commissioned the report because we’ve seen an increase in the number of people contacting us regarding the health benefits of honey.
In particular, we’ve seen a significant rise in demand for Rowse Honey and Lemon and our Rowse Manuka honey products to aid anything from digestive problems to cold and flu symptoms.”
Other findings from the Rowse survey showed that just over one third of UK adults would rather follow their mum’s advice when it came to switching to natural remedies. 42% of females opted to trust their friends when switching compared to only 29% of men, whilst 60% of adults would still seek expert advice from doctor’s and health experts.
The human race survived long before medicines existed as we know them, at one time, natural remedies were the only way to soothe and cure. The benefits from these remedies still stand true today. Of course, always get the best advice before trying a natural remedy yourself.

Hello Sarah
One of my great successes is the concoction for cleaning wounds, especially seporus ones, such as burns. A mixture of about 4 fluid ozs of warm boiled water, a flat teaspoon of sea salt and two teaspoons wine vinegar, stir to dissolve and then apply to or wash the wound/burn two or three times a day depending on the severity, pat dry with sterile gauze (not cotton wool and this leaves fibres) and then apply manuka honey and dressing if necessary.
All the best.
The salt & vinegar mixture is a very good remedy and manuka honey is so healing, great tips, thank you :)
