More info from Coeliac UK

The new food labelling and composition rules for gluten-free and low gluten products have just been published in the European Commission's Official Journal. Food businesses will have until January 2012 to comply with the new requirements.

More information about the new legislation is available from the Food Standards Agency website at: http://www.food.gov.uk/news/newsarchive/2009/jan/newrulesforglutenfree

This legislation is based on the new Codex standard which was agreed in July 2008. For more information on the changes to the Codex standard, please go to:
http://www.coeliac.org.uk/glutenfree_living/codex_standard_for_gluten/default.asp

Coeliac UK will be working with manufacturers and the Food Standards Agency to incorporate these new guidelines into their own criteria in line with the 2012 deadline. We will keep manufacturers and suppliers well informed of the timetable for these changes. In addition we will be embarking on a communication strategy which will educate and inform Members about these changes so they can ultimately make the right choices for their dietary needs.
