Now is a time for growing concern about the food we eat, the effects it has on us and where it comes from. However, our food concerns do not stop there, we are not just worried about the chemicals we put into our own bodies, we are also beginning to think about what we put into our pets bodies.
More and more companies are focusing on holistic, healthy foods and treats for pets. Back in September, when I visited the ‘Taste of Sussex’ Market, I was surprised and delighted to find an organic dog food stand. The stand was run by The Dawg’s Biscuits, who produce healthy, meat-free, chemical-free dog treats and mixes. Their hand made, hand baked treats are great for scratching, for clean teeth, for nice breath, for stress and for training. But do they really work? Their Calm Dawg treats, which were originally specially designed for this time of year to help pooches keep calm during all the fireworks, are now available all year round due to astonishing demand and are now one of their best sellers. So there must be something about them which keeps people coming back for more!
Another rising star, Burns Pet Nutrition also provide a holistic approach to pet health and nutrition. As a practising Veterinary Surgeon and acupuncturist, John Burns believes poor diet is the root cause of many pet conditions including bad breath, itchyness, stiffness and body odour. Over the last 20 years he has developed Burns Real Food for cats and dogs, including a natural hypo-allergenic diet and a new rabbit food range.
If we are trying to lead more healthy lives, then why not extend that to our pets? We love them like a member of the family and worry about their health as much as our own. Plus, by feeding them healthier foods, we benefit too! A friend of mine now swears by her minty organic dog chews - no more bad breath from her beloved doggie!!
