Have you heard of the Slow Food Movement? I hadn’t, until today. Well that’s to say I remember vaguely hearing about it but had no idea what it stood for. I have been enlightened! I want to join! Let me explain…
The Slow Food Movement was founded in 1986 by Carlo Petrini in Italy. The organisation is an international association that promotes food and wine culture, and also defends food and agricultural biodiversity worldwide. It is the antidote to the fast-food culture which has become so prevalent in the last few decades.
Essentially, the movement tries to keep alive traditional foods/dishes/recipes and support the local producers, farmers and growers. They believe in the need for consumer information and protect cultural identities linked to food and gastronomic traditions.
The movement has over 80,000 members from all around the world, who are organized into groups which organize events, tastings, dinners and courses. The movement also organizes main events such as the Salone del Gusto in Turin. This event takes place in October every two years and is the worlds largest quality food and wine fair. Producers come from all over the globe, presenting all manner of delights from their regions.
There is so much more to know about the Slow Food Movement but I can not do them justice here with this short post, so please visit the Slow Food website, where you will find more detailed information about the movement itself, events and membership.
I would dearly love to go to the Salone del Gusto and talk about it here, but we’ll see! :)
