If you are like me you love the idea of a smoothie and everything that can be crammed into it, but you simply can’t stomach the texture and ‘bits’ that you have to try and slurp your way through to get the goodness into you.
I have tried making my own, I have tried changing the ingredients incase it was certain fruits such as the stringy bits of Bananas that were the problem, you have probably bought a countless number of ready made smoothies in the hope that the latest smoothie purchase will be the miracle one that you can actually drink without wanting to give it straight back.
If all of this rings true and you are still yearning to get a smoothie inside you, I may have just the solution based on a really simple idea that struck me the other day, and since then I can drink almost any type of smoothie I want without having to pull a horrid face and put the glass back down.
I was having a think regarding what it is that I don’t like about Smoothies. I like the flavours and smells, I like the colours and simplicity, but I do not like the texture when drinking it. To me it is like drinking a thick yogurt with ‘bits’ in and I just can’t stand it.
I decided that there must be a solution to this problem that would let me enjoy the smoothie without the problem of these chunky bits inside. My first thought was that perhaps I could get a blender / smoothie maker that really mashes things up to a fine water like consistency, but there is no such thing and you still have the thickness of the fruit afterwards, even if the ‘bits’ are gone.
Then it struck me out of the blue… a straw! Could something as simple as a small plastic straw be the solution? I rushed over to the nearest shop and bought the small straws that you can get, the ones that are about 5mm in diameter rather than the ones that are about as thick as a pencil. I chucked some Apples, Black currents and Grapes into a blender, whizzed it up and poured it out, then plonked in my straw…..
Slurp…
Good, really good! Still a little thick, but so easy to drink, tastes just like a black current and apple squash. A quick splash of sparkling / still water into the mix and there you go, a smoothie with all the natural goodness but with none of the physical issues to contend with all thanks to a simple straw!
I still find that one or two fruits suffer a little with this solution, but it’s a case of trying what you want. Grapes and berries along with solid fruits like apples work perfectly. They are also quite juicy and help make the texture a bit more “watery” which is perfect!
So next time you crave a smoothie, get your ingredients and grab yourself a packet of small straws, your body will thank you.
