Firstly, Let me explain what a MEME is…
“In the context of web logs / ‘blogs / blogging and other kinds of personal web sites it’s some kind of list of questions that you saw somewhere else and you decided to answer the questions. Then someone else sees them and does them and so on and so on.” Quote copied from The Daily MEME.
Now, i have dabbled with a MEME before, in my 5 Foods to Live For post, but did not really explain in context. So, there you go, that’s what a MEME is!
I read the following MEME on Dianne’s blog and was inspired to join in. So here is my contribution to…
The Butterfly Effect Meme
This Meme asks you to name food items or events that changed your foodie life. Specifically you are asked to recall an item, person, event, or place that affected you profoundly something that created a moment you can look back at and say that was a defining moment. It doesn’t have to be big, splashy things. Instead, it can be something small and simple something that changed the way you view the world. (Thanks to Paz for the explanation).
An ingredient
Chillis. I don’t really have a conscious memory of the first time I ate one because my mum has always used them in her cooking. But throughout my life I have encountered more and more varieties, and discovered so many ways of cooking and eating them. I love their fragrance and the warmth they give. My favourites are the more mellow, plump varieties such as Summer Heat a cousin of the Jalepeno.
A dish / recipe
My grandmother’s chicken soup. When ever we were poorly as children, my grandmother would make us Portuguese chicken soup - Canja. It always made me feel better and even today when I’m feeling poorly, it’s so comforting to have a bowel of steaming chicken soup. I don’t know if there was a special ingredient or if it was just the love she used to put into making it but I never have been able to make it just the way she did. I remain a great fan of soups, thanks to her.
A meal
Sushi extravaganza - Moshi Moshi Brighton. My dad has always been a great fan of Japanese food, particularly sushi and about 5 years ago we all went to Moshi Moshi for his birthday. I had never really tried sushi up to this point and I remember being fairly apprehensive as to wether I would enjoy raw fish or not. I was delighted beyond my imagining and am now a bone fide sushi addict! I now know it’s not just about raw fish! The other ingredients, accompaniments and etiquette all add to the experience and I am hooked!
A cookbook or other written work
Imperfectly Natural Woman by Janey Lee Grace. This book doesn’t just cover healthy eating, it’s all about leading a more healthy life in general and has inspired me to make many changes in my lifestyle. Above all, her focus on organic produce has caught my attention and as you know from previous posts, I am now trying to become as organic as possible.
A food personality
Jamie Oliver. I know you either love him or hate him but you cannot deny the efforts he has made to try to improve the health of today’s children. I fully stand by his beliefs that nutrition has an overwhelming effect on our capacity to learn and to focus on learning. He is one of my food hero’s without a doubt.
Another personality in your life
My darling David. We have very different pallets, he & I, and I am constantly trying to find dishes I think he would enjoy. It is a great challenge for me, (someone who will pretty much try anything) to create dishes for someone who does not have such a wide experience of foods as I do. Little by little I am introducing new flavours and textures to him and I’m sure that my experiments are as much of a challenge to him as they are to me sometimes!!
I believe it is customary to ‘tag’ other bloggers with memes, so that they answer the questions too, but as far as I’m concerned, this is a free for all! So, let me know if you take up this meme challenge and send me a link to your site, I’d love to know what your answers are.
