Stalebread_01 A survey by Which? (Commissioned by Sainsbury’s) reports “a fifth of UK households say they are throwing away less food as the credit crunch tightens budgets”.

The poll also found that 45% of us have “started cooking from scratch, and between a quarter and a third regularly use leftovers for subsequent meals”. This is great news for the Love Food Hate Waste campaign launched by WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme).

WRAP, although not directly involved in this research, feel it is not surprising that the poll found “The cost of food is leading shoppers to worry about the food they waste”.   WRAP’s Love Food Hate Waste campaign is responding to this concern by offering quick and easy tips and ideas on how consumers can use and enjoy their food, rather than binning it.

Julia Falcon from WRAP says: “People do worry about wasting food, but often lack the inspiration to do something about it, and that’s why we launched lovefoodhatewaste.com. We are all managing to throw away a third of the food we buy, there’s still a long way to go.”

So, there’s still a long way to go and we’re still wasting so much! However, there are many resources and ideas out there. Sainsbury’s not only support WRAP in the LFHW campaign but they’ve also joined forces with Good Housekeeping to do their bit to raise food waste awareness, with Love your leftovers. Over the next few months they’ll be focusing on food that gets thrown out, creating tasty meal ideas and sharing their top tips, on their website.

A spokesperson for WRAP said “Sainsbury is supporting WRAP’s Love Food Hate Waste campaign by encouraging consumers to use up leftovers. We think this initiative may help give them some ideas”.

With the combined knowledge and guidance provided by both LFHW and Love your leftovers, there is no reason at all for wasting food. Plus, there’s so much more out there, knowledge is power and by sharing our tips and ideas, we can hopefully increase that fifth of UK households before they run the next survey! Tell me your favourite way to use up your leftovers?
